Product Description

Octylparaben is a straight-chain ultra-long-alkyl paraben preservative synthesized by esterification reaction between 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and n-octanol. With further extended alkyl carbon chain, its lipophilic-water partition coefficient keeps rising and oil-phase affinity is obviously superior to Heptylparaben and Hexylparaben. It tends to accumulate heavily in oil domains within emulsion systems and delivers potent inhibitory activity against mold and yeast, while its bacteriostatic performance against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria remains weak. Higher lipophilicity brought by longer carbon chain is accompanied by elevated dermal penetration risk. Public toxicological and endocrine-relevant safety data are very limited and cannot support safety evaluation for cosmetic applications. It is nearly-odorless white crystalline solid with extremely low solubility in cold water. Direct addition into aqueous phase is strictly forbidden. It shall be fully pre-dissolved in polar co-solvents such as ethanol under agitation until the solution is completely clear and particle-free before incorporation into formulations. Skipping pre-dissolution will directly lead to crystal precipitation and suspended white speckles, resulting in visual defects of finished goods. Meanwhile, the concentration of free active preservative molecules decreases, greatly raising the risk of preservative-challenge failure.

  1. Solubility: Practically insoluble in cold water. Fully pre-dissolve in ethanol with agitation until clear and particle-free before addition, otherwise crystal precipitation will damage product appearance and reduce preservative efficiency.
  2. pH requirement: Optimal antimicrobial pH4-7. Efficacy decreases significantly above pH8; not suitable for alkaline formulations. Control system pH in early-stage formulation work and avoid prolonged strong-alkaline exposure.
  3. Compatibility: High-loading strong non-ionic emulsifiers trigger micelle encapsulation, sequester this ingredient inside micelles, lower free active concentration in aqueous phase and weaken antimicrobial performance. For non-cosmetic applications, avoid high-dosage non-ionic emulsifiers and optimize compounding strategy.
  4. Processing condition: Processing temperature ≤80ºC. Avoid prolonged high-temperature heating to mitigate ester-bond hydrolysis risk and maintain chemical stability of raw material.
  5. Formula validation: Even for non-cosmetic scenarios, recommended dosage is for R&D reference only. Preservative-challenge test must be performed for every finished formula to verify anti-microbial protection against bacteria, mold and yeast.
  6. Storage: Keep sealed in cool, dry and dark environment with moisture protection. It tends to melt and cake under high-temperature conditions. Caking does not indicate deterioration; remelt completely before use.
  7. Safety operation: Industrial-grade raw material, not for oral intake. Avoid direct high-concentration contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Wear protective gloves and implement basic personal protection during handling.
